How to make scented hoover discs

Scented hoover discs — also called vacuum freshener discs — can be a simple product to add to your range, but consistency matters. This free guide walks through the whole process: checking your fragrance, working out your batch size, weighing and soaking, drying and testing, recording the batch, and the mistakes that catch makers out.

1. Check your fragrance first

Before you mix anything, check what your oil actually allows.

✓ Don't assume one fragrance percentage suits every oil
✓ Check the diffuser-base guidance
✓ Check the fragrance oil SDS and IFRA information
✓ A common example is 75% base / 25% fragrance — treat it as an example, not a universal recipe
✓ Test small before scaling up

2. Decide your batch size

Start with the formula and work out your weights.

✓ Choose how much finished mixture you want to make
✓ If your tested formula is 75% base / 25% fragrance, a 100g batch = 75g base + 25g fragrance

total batch weight − fragrance oil = diffuser base required

3. Weigh, blend and soak

✓ Weigh the diffuser base accurately on digital scales
✓ Add the fragrance oil according to your tested formula
✓ Stir thoroughly until evenly combined
✓ Place the felt discs into the mixture
✓ Let the discs absorb the liquid evenly
✓ Gently move or turn the discs if needed

Recording weights rather than volume helps repeatability.

4. Dry, test and package

Don't rush this bit — drying is part of the product.

✓ Remove the discs and place them on a clean surface
✓ Allow them to dry before packaging or use
✓ The finished disc should not be dripping or excessively wet
✓ Check scent strength, even distribution and visible residue
✓ Test how it performs in use and whether the packaging retains the fragrance
✓ Test first — scale later

Published examples may suggest around 1–2 hours drying time, but verify this in your own testing.

5. Record the batch

This is the part makers skip — and the part that makes the next batch repeatable.

✓ Product name, batch number and date
✓ Fragrance used + supplier
✓ Diffuser base used + supplier
✓ Total batch weight + fragrance percentage
✓ Number of discs + finished yield
✓ Absorption time, drying time and test notes

Yield matters — it helps with costing, stock control, production planning and repeatability.

6. Common mistakes to avoid

Using one fragrance percentage for everything
Different oils can have different limits.
Oversaturating the felt
More liquid doesn't always make a better product.
Packaging before the discs are fully ready
Make drying time part of your testing.
Not recording what changed
Changes to %, disc count, absorption time or drying time should be noted.

If you plan to sell them, check your fragrance SDS, IFRA and supplier guidance for the actual formulation used.
